Irish to the Rescue - Publication & Launch

About this Event

The book being launched is a follow-on publication based on a seminar held on 30 April 2019. The seminar was organised to celebrate the tercentenary of the rescue and escape of Princess Maria Clementina Sobieska by a group of Irish people and one French woman, led by the indefatigable Jacobite agent, Charles Wogan of Kildare.

The book opens with a note written by the Polish Ambassador to Ireland, Her Excellency Ms Anna Sochańska; an introduction, written by Professor Marian Lyons (NUI Maynooth); and chapters written by such respected historians as Professor Edward Corp (University of Toulouse), Dr Declan Downey (University College Dublin), Dr Aneta Markuszewska (University of Warsaw), Dr Éamonn Ó Ciardha (Ulster University), Dr Jaroslaw Pietrzak (Pedagogical University, Krakow), Ms Estelle Gittins (Trinity College Dublin) and Richard K. Maher (Rathmines College, Dublin).

Both the seminar and the book project have been generously supported by both the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Ireland and the Embassy of the Republic of France in Ireland. His Excellency, Uachtarán na hÉireann, President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins supported and attended the seminar.
